Yin And Yang In Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Yin-Yang symbol is the result of Chinese philosophy regarding the functioning of the universe. The black and white shapes inside the circle represent the interaction of two energies called "Yin" and "Yang"; they are not completely black or white nor can one exist without the other. The curve of the symbol reminds us of the ever-changing balance between yin and yang, which represent all the opposing principles found in the universe.
The Yellow Emperor said, “The principle of Yin and Yang is the basis of the whole universe. It is the basis of everything in creation. Yin, the darkest element, is passive, dark, feminine, wet, dead, small and corresponds to the night; yang, the brightest element, is active, light, masculine, dry, from birth, great, and corresponds to the day.
The cyclical nature of Yin and Yang means several things to a Chinese medical and philosophy student:
All phenomena change into their opposites in an eternal cycle of inversion.
Since one principle produces the other, all phenomena have within themselves the seeds of their opposite state. For example, the disease has the seeds of health and health contains the seeds of disease.
Although an opponent does not seem present, nothing is completely devoid of its opposite state. Traditional Chinese Medicine applies Yin Yang philosophies to cure diseases. When the body is in the balance between Yin and Yang, health is predominant; when Yin and Yang are out of balance, disease occurs.
According to Chinese medicine texts, diseases caused by yang pathogens usually present with symptoms of heat, while diseases caused by yin pathogens usually present with cold symptoms. Efforts to diagnose Yin or Yang pathogens result in intake forms with questions like: Do you prefer hot or cold drinks? o What is your optimal time of day? Once a Chinese medicine practitioner has determined the nature of an imbalance, their goal is to restore balance through a variety of approaches, such as acupuncture, herbs and recommended diet or lifestyle changes. As the balance is restored in the body, so is health.
