Five Obstacles To A Successful Network And How To Overcome Them
The ability to connect with people is critical to the success of any business. Professional networking events offer opportunities to interact with others on a personal level and to develop fruitful relationships. These opportunities are essential for anyone who wants to grow a business or promote a career.
Many people feel uncomfortable walking into a room full of strangers and engaging in conversation. Here are five common obstacles you may encounter and tips to help you overcome them.
RESISTANCE TO TALKING TO STRANGERS. At an early age he was taught not to talk to people he didn't know. He is not sure. In certain situations today, this is still good advice. In business, however, talking to strangers is a way to generate interest and support for your products and services. If you only talk to people you already know, you will miss the opportunity to make new connections and make valuable contacts.
To overcome your discomfort when talking to strangers, set a goal before attending any networking event. Decide how many new contacts you want to establish or how many strangers you want to meet. In some cases, you can specifically target the people you would like to meet.
So come up with some icebreakers or conversation starters. Prepare questions you can ask anyone you meet at the event. You may want to ask about other people's activities, their connection with the sponsoring organization, or their opinion of the place.
LACK OF FORMAL INTRODUCTION. It's much easier to make a new contact when someone else is taking care of the presentation and leading the way. If you wait for someone else to move, you may not know anyone. At networking events, the goal is to meet as many people as possible.
This is the time to take the bull by the horns, reach out to people you don't know, introduce yourself, and strike up a conversation. You can do this if you have prepared your self-introduction in advance.
It won't be presented the same way every time. This could be your first time attending an association meeting. If so, you might want to say this as part of your introduction. Let people know who you are, why you are there and give them a reason to ask more about you.
Fear of being seen as a push. You may think that you are discouraging people if you are assertive and that if they want to talk to you, they will take the first step. If that's the way you think, you'll be spending your time alone at the reception or meeting and leaving without a single new connection. Being open, friendly, and caring doesn't discourage people.
You won't look too aggressive if you are looking for "accessible" people. These are the ones who are alone or who speak in groups of three or more. Two people talking to each other are not accessible because they may have a private conversation and you may interrupt it.
THINKING OTHERS MIGHT NOT LIKE. There is always a risk that the other person is not interested in you and does not want to meet or talk to you. It happens. If so, don't take it personally. Nothing risky is nothing gained. When you have a cold shoulder, smile, go ahead, and say to yourself, "Come on?"
I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR INTENTIONS. Getting close to someone of the opposite sex to start a conversation can feel more like flirting than networking. This is more of a problem for women than for men. Women have an equal place in the workplace and need to establish professional relationships just like men. Female entrepreneurs can no longer afford to hold back when the opportunity arises.
Neither men nor women will have their motives misunderstood if they show up professionally in their attire and keep the conversation focused on business matters or topics that aren't personal or private. Whatever your obstacles are, address them before the next networking event and come up with a personal plan to overcome them. Once this is done, you will find yourself connecting with confidence and courtesy every time, and the results will be reflected in your bottom line.
