What To Do When Alone On Vacation
Being alone on vacation is a great challenge for many people. Holidays often evoke images of family, warmth, and sharing special moments. Loneliness can be overwhelming when you have no one to share your vacation with.
Many people, however, don't understand what holidays really mean and what makes them special. Holidays are not about what you GET, but what you GIVE. Many people have the misconception that the joy of the holidays is about what you get and not what you share. Our hearts are filled with love when we give and share love instead of receiving love.
This may seem like a paradox. Many people spend their time with other people trying to get love, attention, and approval, thinking that this is what makes them feel happy and worthy. But attracting the attention of others to fill us up is like eating chocolate when you are alone, for the moment it works, but then you need it more and more. Eventually it becomes an addiction.
What really fills the void is giving love. If you are alone on vacation, the question is: how can I give love in a way that gives me joy?
Here are some tips for sharing your love and care while on vacation:
* Collect toys from friends and keep donations and bring them to children who otherwise would not have toys. You can find these children through schools, churches and various other organizations. * Find a shelter for battered women in your area and help us create the holiday by preparing food, decorating the tree and simply spending time with them. Last year, a friend of mine organized several of her local markets to donate food during Christmas to the local shelter that housed mothers and their children who had abandoned their abusive husbands. She met mothers and children and received great satisfaction by giving them a rich Christmas.
* Spending time with older people in nursing homes, especially those who have no family. Spending time worrying about another lonely person will go a long way in eliminating your loneliness!
* Volunteer to help serve food to the needy during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many churches and other charitable organizations welcome volunteers to help with the food lines during the holidays.
* Find a retirement center near you that has a special holiday event and share your time with other people who are also alone during the holidays. Last year a friend of mine, who had just left her husband and was alone for the first time with no family around her, went to a beautiful senior center on the east coast. Twenty people gathered there to share Thanksgiving together. There was a wonderful ceremony of gratitude that she, she said, filled her heart and she enjoyed spending time with new people. * Find a church, temple, or 12-step group in your area that has special events for singles during the holidays. Attend these events with the intention of sharing your love with others, which you can do simply by being interested in hearing from someone else. We all love to be heard and understood, and we all have the ability to give this to another.
One of my all-time favorite movies is A Christmas Carol, the one with Alistair Sim. I love the Christmas morning scene where Scrooge realizes that the time has not passed and he has a chance to give. You are so happy at the prospect of giving, that you can hardly bear it! He dances and flips and laughs and laughs with the joy of giving! In one night he went from being a miserable old man concerned only with obtaining, to a man who now focuses only on giving, and has become a joyful person.
While you may not have any money to give, we all have love to give. You have no idea how much you could enrich your life and that of someone else simply by dedicating your time, your attention, your interest, your smile, your understanding. Whatever the circumstances of your life, you always have the opportunity to give your love. You will find that taking care of others, especially on vacation, is a profound way of taking care of yourself.
