Who Was Saint Patrick And Why Do We Celebrate His Life?

Who Was Saint Patrick And Why Do We Celebrate His Life?

St. Patrick's Day is known as a day of celebration and holidays, but very few people know the true story of St. Patrick and who he really is. By tradition, he is a patron saint of the Catholic religion due to the imprisonment he went through, his time of solitude and great faith, and finally the number of people who were known to God through him. It is a legend that he listened to the angels and they helped him in his decisions. All in all, he is known as the patron saint of good luck and blessings for Catholics from that time until the 21st century. Saint Patrick was a royal person born around 400 AD. in Roman Britain when the British Isles were still under Roman rule. He was born with the name Maewyn. His name was not changed until he was in the monastery. His father was an army soldier, and Patrick also reports that he was a deacon, civil servant, and city councilor, the son of a Roman-British priest. The family was Christian, but they were not extremely religious, some historians even claim that Patrick was agnostic in his childhood. According to his most famous work, the Confessio, Patrick was captured along with many others when his village was attacked and he was taken to Ireland as a slave. Patrick was under the authority of a Druid high priest and his family, and here he learned the native Celtic language which he later used to communicate and help those who had converted.

After 8 years of captivity, he fled at the age of twenty-two, and legend has it that he was ordered by an angel to spend twelve years in a monastery near Paris, France, where he adopted the name, Patrick. It was during this time of captivity that Patrick met God and developed the habit of praying during the day to strengthen himself and be closer to God. In the Confessio it is reported that he often prayed up to 100 times a day. One night, while in the monastery, he said he heard many rumors calling him back to Ireland to help the remaining slaves. At the time he was somewhere in his thirties and so he answered the calls. He became one of the first Christian missionaries in Ireland.

He trusted in the Lord and traveled everywhere, baptizing and confirming with tireless zeal. Indeed, Patrick managed to convert Ireland to Christianity. And he also got important converts even among royal families. For 20 years he had traveled all over Ireland, founding monasteries, schools, and churches, which would help him in his conversions. He died on March 17th.

You can see how originally this was a Catholic holy day, but today St Patrick's Day has become a more secular holiday. Or rather, "let it be the day of Ireland". Speculation as to why this holiday is so popular could be the arrival of spring which occurs in a few days.
