Only For The Holidays?
Being alone is a challenge for many people. This challenge can be especially important during the holidays if you are single or recently divorced and don't have a family around you. Holidays are a time to share love, and many people end up getting depressed when they don't have people to share the love with. If you find yourself in this situation, what can you do to make the holidays joyful instead of depressing? The key phrase here is SHARE THE LOVE. Too often, people think in terms of receiving love rather than giving and sharing their love. They don't realize that it is the act of giving their love that is so rewarding.
Gail had grown up very alone in an emotionally distant family, with parents who did not freely give their love and relatives who were also cold and distant. She had married an emotionally distant man and, after 7 years of solitude, she had decided to leave him. This was his first solo holiday season.
Gail decided that she would never be alone and alone at these parties again. She researched service agencies that needed volunteers and discovered a women's shelter in her area for women and their children hiding from physically abusive husbands. The shelter was in dire need of funds for food, which Gail did not have. What she had was time to help collect food. Every day, after her job as a secretary, Gail wandered the markets in her area until she found someone willing to donate Thanksgiving dinners for mothers and their children. Then, on Thanksgiving, she spent her time at the shelter cooking, decorating, serving, and dining with these brave women who had left their abusive husbands to save themselves and their children. It was the best Thanksgiving she ever had! By choosing to share her love with the people who needed her, she felt full of love.
Gail had such a rewarding experience that she found a small part-time job in addition to her normal job so that she could buy gifts for the children at the shelter for Christmas. She had a blast buying gifts for the children and seeing their happy faces being opened on Christmas Day! Gail felt anything but lonely and alone. Gary was in a similar situation to Gail's. He was single, he had been the only child of parents who were no longer alive and had no close relatives. Her cleaning business didn't give her many opportunities to make friends. Gary had spent many vacations in solitude feeling isolated and depressed, and a few years ago he decided to do something about it.
Gary loved animals. As a child, his dog had been his main bond with love. After some research, Gary discovered that there was a wonderful animal shelter half an hour from his home, a shelter that he loved and cared for and did not euthanize the animals. Gary began volunteering one day a week on weekends by cleaning, feeding, playing with puppies and kittens, helping interview people who wanted to adopt a pet, and meeting other volunteers. He found that he was really connected with the people who volunteered there. Many of them were loving people and deeply devoted to animal care. As her friendships developed, she found she had a new sense of family-centered around the shelter. Thanksgiving and Christmas were spent sometimes with other volunteers who had no family and sometimes with the families of some volunteers. Gary's life had become full and satisfying. Last I knew, he was dating a woman who also volunteered at the animal shelter.
No matter what your life situation is, you can always share your love with others. Instead of feeling lonely and lonely during the holiday season, open your heart to give. There are many people and animals who would appreciate your love.
