Ancient Chinese Traditions Revive In The World New Year's Shows
Two years ago, some Chinese friends took me to NTDTVs (New Tang Dynasty TV) live from the Chinese New Year show. It was a thrilling and enchanting performance of music and dance, featuring traditional Chinese instruments and costumes faithfully recreated from ancient manuscripts, paintings, and pottery. Dragons, drums, and dancers evoked the grandeur of the great Chinese dynasties and the legends of ancient history.
Ancient Chinese traditions speak of harmony between heaven and earth. They say humans were created by the gods. Culture, as well as moral and spiritual guidance, have also been imparted to humans by divine beings at various times in history. When humans respect the Tao, the Law of Divine Way, and follow the order of Heaven, society will be prosperous and peaceful.
Like most Westerners, he knew next to nothing about the Chinese New Year. So I asked my friends to tell me more and to share their favorite New Year memories. I learned that the Chinese New Year is celebrated by almost a quarter of the world population in various Asian countries where it is the most important holiday of the year. The lunar calendar follows and the date varies each year, depending on the cycle of the moons.
Several friends shared the fireworks and favorite foods, dumplings, and various traditions were often mentioned. One is to write poems or lucky phrases on red paper to pin on each family's door. After breakfast, there would be a tour. The first stop would be at a local temple to burn incense and honor the gods. Then came the visits to relatives and friends. In many cities, musicians paraded through the streets to announce the arrival of spring.
The Lantern Festival marks the end of the New Year season. It developed from the ancient belief that celestial spirits flew in the light of the first full moon.
