Four Ways To Boost Your Online Business Through Networking
When you think about networking, do you imagine a group of people chatting, trying to offer their services to each other while exchanging business cards and speeches in the elevator?
You know, some people like this kind of thing. And when they do well (which is a rare talent), they get genuine rewards. Rewards like new clients, joint venture partners, expert consultants, helpful friends - in other words, win-win relationships.
But for many of us, the thought of going to a networking event isn't enough to bathe an angry cat. While we think it should be done, we'd rather be flea food.
Do not worry. There is a lot more and less networking than you might think! You can get the same wonderful rewards without having to mix with a bunch of strangers.
Important: With any type of network, the key is to build powerful relationships by giving. Give your attention, advice, ideas, suggestions, support, compliments, referrals, and maybe even your business to others. Give, give, give and receive more than you can imagine!
There are many ways to get a freelance job through networking, even if you hate chatting. Here are four powerful examples.
1. Tell your family and friends about your online activity.
It sounds like a no-brainer, but you will be surprised how many people fail to do it. You don't have to introduce your services/products to your family and friends, but you certainly shouldn't keep them a secret! During normal conversations, you will have plenty of opportunities to say that you enjoy internet marketing and make money from your online activities. Just plant the seed and it can eventually turn into an unexpected deal.
And remember, even if your family and friends don't need the products/services you offer, they are likely to know someone who has them.
Key: Each person has connections with an average of 250 other people. When you decide not to mention your services to cousin Annie and neighbor Tom, you miss the opportunity to offer your services to hundreds of people you know!
2. Participate in virtual networks.
You can do it online, from the comfort of your home office. In addition to the benefits of not having to deal with people face to face, virtual networks allow you to create contact lists and join online communities made up of people from all over the world. You would probably never meet most of these people otherwise. Your virtual network can grow faster and faster than any form of traditional network. Are you on someone's mailing list? (Of course, you do!) When asked for your opinion, give yours. When they raise an issue that interests you, send them a response. If they are selling something that you can profit from (and it fits your budget), buy it and then give them positive feedback about it.
Tip: Become someone they know and love to listen to, rather than one of the many anonymous names on your mailing list. Participate in online discussion forums, especially those frequented by your ideal customers. Hide before you jump so you don't accidentally jump and make fun of yourself (not good for winning customers). Read the posts, feel the vibe. When you have something useful to contribute, participate. If forum rules allow, include a signature block with a link to your website. But DON'T sell your services! Give valuable advice freely. The idea is to show your knowledge, experience, and desire to help others.
Key: Eventually, forum members will know, like, and trust you. The next natural step for them is to think of you when they (or the people in your network) need the products/services you provide.
3. Show your talent.
Write, write, write! Submit articles to online article directories, write reports and/or e-books, create your website and e-zine to showcase your knowledge and skills, always including your contact information. If applicable, offer to provide free special articles or reports for the people you are connecting with through your virtual networking activities.
Consider offering free workshops related to your niche through your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, or other groups. If you have a job, look for the possibility of offering scholarship sessions (at lunchtime) on topics like 10 Tips for Making More Money Online in Your Free Time for Your Colleagues.
Key: You want to become the obvious person that people will think of when they need your experience or the products/services you offer.
4. Attend seminars.
What kind of seminars, workshops, conferences, or meetings are your clients attending? Go to those events. They are gold mines for networking and offer many opportunities for natural conversations with the people you want to meet. You don't have to chat or propose your services. Be friendly, ask questions, participate in discussions and be yourself.
Key: Not only will you learn about the specific issues and issues your target customers are interested in, but you will also build relationships with them.
