Does Google Desktop Really Put Your Privacy At Risk?
There has been a lot of talk recently about Google Talk and how there are serious privacy issues with the new app.
The biggest concern seems to come from being able to find and share multiple computers with a single account. In other words, you can use a single desktop search account to search, index and share files between desktops and laptops, for example.
But are these concerns based on truth? Is there really a privacy issue here?
I downloaded and installed the new beta version of Desktop Search the other day. It has some great new features, like the ability to remove sidebar panels and dock them wherever you want on the desktop.
And there are many other panels available to let you do everything from managing what is indexed to spending time playing.
One of the coolest features is its ability to go beyond the desktop you're on to do a variety of things. Now I can play tic tac toe with colleagues or even friends from all over the world.
But the biggest and worrying update for some is the ability to remotely index files and share them using Google's servers to temporarily store items.
By activating this feature, you grant Google the right to archive your files for up to 30 days. This is where the heart of the matter lies - there seems to be no way around this 30-day requirement.
All I have to say is "so what?"
What if you were to give Google this ability? Google will encrypt the data so that no one else can access it. And even though there's some kind of subpoena from the Department of Justice requesting access to these files, I don't think it's going to hold up in court.
This is because Google has created a network through which all your activities on Google are linked to a Google account. Your custom homepage, Gmail, Google Analytics, AdWords, and AdSense accounts share the same Google account. Therefore, it would be difficult for anyone to obtain a subpoena to review information pertaining to only a portion of that account. Legality aside, if you are concerned that your privacy will be passed on to Google to use this system, please do not register.
You can still download and use the new Desktop Search with most of its new features, but you don't need to use file sharing.
But what if you want to share files between computers?
Well, do what I did: I went to your favorite electronics store and bought a USB stick. I just bought a USB flash drive with more than 2GB of storage for under $ 100. Now I can easily transfer anything between any computer without worrying that some government agency wants to know what's inside.
As I said, I installed the new Google Desktop and looked at the settings for searching and sharing files but didn't turn them on. I don't need to be able to search my home computer from work and vice versa, nor do I need to share files between the two computers.
And if I do, I'll just use the FTP site I set up on a home computer or the flash drive mentioned above.
Really, when it comes to all the other ways Google captures your personal data, from search history to Gmail, should we be so concerned that some files may end up being stored on a Google server somewhere? I think we should have other concerns. For example, I think we should be concerned with what Google already knows about us through the services I mentioned above.
I think entrepreneurs should be concerned that such a service allows employees to easily steal and transfer data to and from work.
I think if you are so afraid of the US government violating your privacy, you shouldn't have a Google account, Google Desktop Search or a Gmail account. In fact, I don't think you should have internet accounts because, honestly, everyone is a target for the Justice Department. Plus, I can almost guarantee that your local ISP will fold and deliver the data a lot easier than Google.
So, before you start complaining about how Google might violate your privacy, remember that you have the option to prevent this from happening. It is just a matter of choosing to do so.
